How Ajax works, according to Ajax
According to Ajax's website, Ajax runs quietly in the background and prepares entries in real time, capturing work activity across Word and PDF documents, email, the browser, VoIP phone calls, the calendar, Zoom and Teams, and other applications.
From that activity, Ajax generates what it describes as polished, OCG-compliant time entries with matters assigned automatically, customized to billing preferences such as detail level, tense, grouping style, and word choices, and it states that it learns from the lawyer's edits.
Ajax's own FAQ describes the lawyer's role plainly: Ajax captures everything you work on, and you review and release at the end of the day. Ajax lists integrations with Clio, MyCase, Filevine, PracticePanther, SurePoint, Centerbase, Actionstep, and Soluno, and states compatibility with most other billing systems.
On privacy and security, Ajax states that data is encrypted at rest and in transit, that raw activity data is automatically and permanently purged, that customer data is never used to train AI models, and that it is SOC 2 certified. On pricing, Ajax does not publish rates; it describes per-seat pricing on annual contracts, quoted through a sales call, with a free pilot to start.

Credit where due
Where Ajax is genuinely strong
Passive capture is at its best on the work you'd never think to record: the six-minute email reply, the quick call between meetings, the fragment of research before lunch. Because Ajax watches everything, it can surface time a busy lawyer would simply forget, and that's a real strength of the model.
Ajax has also invested in the last mile of entry quality, with OCG-aware drafting and per-firm customization of how entries read, and its published security posture, including purging raw activity data and SOC 2 certification, shows the company takes the obvious concern about background capture seriously.
If your main problem is that whole categories of small work vanish before anyone thinks about billing, a passive timekeeper is a credible answer, and you should evaluate Ajax on its merits.
Why we built it the other way
Our position: activity is not billing judgment
A background agent can observe that a document was open and a call happened. It cannot observe what the work meant, what was actually accomplished, or what you would stand behind billing. Someone still supplies that judgment, and in an end-of-day review model, the lawyer supplies it hours later, skimming a list of machine drafts. In our view that quietly recreates the reconstruction problem these tools set out to solve.
We also believe the capture surface matters. A tool that drafts from observed activity must observe the applications where privileged and confidential work happens, across every matter and everything else on the screen. Ajax describes real safeguards, and we take them at their word. But a dictated entry raises a narrower question in the first place, because the only content that ever exists is what the lawyer chose to say.
Finally, we believe a first-person contemporaneous narrative is the stronger record. An entry that begins as the lawyer's own account of the work, captured minutes after it happened, is more specific and easier to defend to a client or an auditor than one assembled from activity logs and edited later. That belief is why CaseClock starts with your voice.
