Export Guide

How to Export from Time59

Export your clients using the Time59 Export menu, then manually capture your Projects list. Combine both into a single CSV and use the CaseClock CSV Normalizer to prepare it for import.

Part 1

Export your clients

Time59 includes a built-in Export menu for client records. This is the cleanest export available in the application.

  1. 1

    Log in to Time59.

  2. 2

Go to the Export section in the main navigation or Settings menu.

  3. 3

    Select Export to Excel.

  4. 4

Choose Clients as the data type to export.

  5. 5

Click Export and download the file.

  6. 6

Open the downloaded Excel file and review the columns — you should see client names, client IDs (if your firm uses them), email addresses, and any other client details stored in Time59.

  7. 7

Save the file as CSV (File → Save As → CSV).

Part 2

Capture your projects (matters)

Time59 does not include a direct export for the Projects list. Use the copy-and-paste method below to capture this data.

  1. 1

Open your Projects list in Time59. This is the list of all active and closed matters/files.

  2. 2

Select all projects visible in the list (use Ctrl+A or Cmd+A if available, or select all rows manually).

  3. 3

Copy the selected data to your clipboard.

  4. 4

Open a blank Excel spreadsheet and paste the data.

  5. 5

Add a header row if one is not pasted automatically — at minimum include: project name, client name or ID, and any matter identifiers visible in the list.

  6. 6

Review and clean the pasted data, removing any extra rows or formatting artifacts.

  7. 7

    Save the spreadsheet as CSV.

Combining the two files

Once you have both CSVs — one for clients and one for projects — you can combine them in Excel using VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH to join client names from the clients file into the projects file by client ID. Alternatively, upload both files to the CaseClock CSV Normalizer, which supports multi-file imports.

client_idClient ID from the Clients export, if your firm uses client IDs in Time59
client_nameClient name from the Clients export
matter_idProject/matter ID from the Projects list, if visible

practice_areaNot typically included in Time59 exports — add manually if needed
billing_lawyerNot typically included in Time59 exports — add manually if needed
jurisdictionNot included — add manually if needed
billing_rateNot typically included in Time59 exports — add manually if needed

Time59's exports include fewer columns than more full-featured practice management systems. Fields like practice area, billing lawyer, and billing rate may need to be added manually in Excel before importing.
